The Project ran online 1st May - 12th June 2020 as a response to the isolation many of us were dealing with, and the temporary closure of Material Institute due to Covid-19 pandemic.

When we began, the brief asked “Make the most of where you are, to use the resources of your current home to form an individual project. Innovate and value all the materials you can get hold of. Use creativity and imagination to transform everyday things without going outside or having to buy fabrics”. For many students this was their first art or fashion project.

As it unravelled during this already difficult time, the young artists had to also work through yet another acute reminder of racial injustice and pain, triggered by the police killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade. We applaud all the participants for their focus, creativity and for finishing their projects. We believe in their art as our future.

The project was a collaboration Material Institute x Assemble x Faustine Steinmetz.
